What I've learned from building YourPING so far

One of the biggest lessons I've learned while developing technology for community organisations is that you can have a perfectly good idea and still not understand all the ways people might use it. YourPING has shown me that listening can be just as important as writing code ...

Building YourPING has taught me that listening to users, testing early and adapting quickly are essential

When it comes to developing technology for community organisations, the people doing the work every day understand things that aren't always obvious from behind a computer screen. I've discovered that some of the most valuable improvements to YourPING have come from conversations rather than coding sessions.

My bestie was one of the first people to
make me think differently!

When I showed her YourPING, she got it immediately and asked whether it could help her mum. Until then, I'd viewed the service from my own perspective as someone living alone and working from home. Her question made me realise how many other people might benefit.

Then I spoke to a charity CEO who raised something equally important. Not everyone has a smartphone, and not everyone who could potentially benefit from reassurance would be comfortable using one.

That conversation led me to introduce SMS replies, letting someone with an ordinary mobile phone, or in a bad signal area, respond with a simple Y or N. Getting that working was a particularly satisfying bit of development.

But he also helped me understand something else: YourPING
won't be suitable for everybody!

Someone who struggles with memory difficulties, or routinely leaves their mobile phone somewhere they won't hear it, might not benefit from daily check-ins. Understanding those limitations matters just as much as identifying opportunities.

I've also learned that charities need technology to fit their budgets and working practices, not the other way around.

Some people will always need a personal telephone call. But if others can handle routine check-ins automatically, staff and volunteers could spend more time supporting people who haven't responded or have said they're not OK.

That's what I want our free community pilot programmes to explore. How much time could organisations genuinely save? And how will the people they support feel about receiving daily reassurance rather than an occasional call?

I don't have those answers yet, and
I'm not going to pretend I do!

What I do know is that developing technology for charities and community organisations means being willing to listen, adapt and sometimes admit that your original assumptions were wrong. That's how I want The YourPING Foundation to work.

By actually listening to the organisations we partner with, understanding the people they support and building a reliable, affordable service that genuinely helps.

Because good technology should fit around people, not expect people to fit around it.

Until next time ...

About Steffi Lewis ...

Steffi Lewis

Based in the charming village of Hanslope in Buckinghamshire, UK, I bring over 30 years of experience in web development. From creating my first website for the Open University in 1993, through being part of the dot com boom, to my explorations in SaaS and AI over the last few years, my journey has been a rich tapestry of web projects, big and small, both funded and bootstrapped.

YourPING was created around a very modern idea: in a world of remote work, automated living and digital communication, it has become surprisingly easy for people to quietly drift off the radar. Bills are paid automatically, shopping arrives online and many people can go days without speaking to someone directly, even while remaining connected to the world through screens and social media.

Designed as a calm and supportive daily check-in system, YourPING helps provide quiet reassurance for people who live alone, work remotely, travel frequently or simply value their independence. Using browser notifications, SMS backup alerts, email escalation and trusted contacts, the platform is intentionally simple to use without complicated gadgets, wearables or intrusive monitoring.

At its heart, YourPING is not about fear or surveillance. It is about modern independent living and the simple comfort of knowing that if something feels unusual, somebody will notice.

My head is in the cloud, my heart belongs to the web, and my soul is filled with such beautiful code 💚
