When setting up YourPING, who should be a trusted contact?

Choosing trusted contacts may sound straightforward: pick someone you know, add their details, and you're done. But it's worth thinking a little more about the decision. A trusted contact isn't there to monitor someone or take responsibility for their well-being. They're simply someone you trust to reach out when YourPING lets them know that a little human contact may be needed ...

A trusted contact can be a loved one, friend, neighbour or someone in your community you trust to reach out.

A trusted contact can be a loved one, friend, neighbour or someone in your community you trust to reach out.

With YourPING, you can have up to five trusted contacts. Often, one will be the person paying for the subscription and arranging check-ins for someone they care about. The others might be family members, close friends or neighbours. But there's no rule saying they have to be relatives. A trusted community member, such as a local vicar, could be equally appropriate if they're happy to help.

The important thing is choosing people who
know the person being checked in on!

If someone responds to their YourPING check-in to say they're not OK, their configured trusted contacts receive an SMS, email or both immediately. If they don't respond to their check-in at all, trusted contacts are notified after an hour. Everyone receives the notification at the same time, so no one person has to pass the message along.

What happens next is deliberately human. It might start with a WhatsApp message saying, "Hey, are you OK? You missed your check-in this morning." If there's no reply, the trusted contact might call a little later. Someone who lives nearby might eventually pop round, while another person may have previously agreed what they should do if they can't make contact.

Those arrangements are personal, and YourPING doesn't try to prescribe them. Our role is simply to make sure the people you've chosen know someone may need to reach out.

You can also configure YourPING to notify trusted contacts when someone successfully checks in to say they're OK. That's optional, not the default, but some families may appreciate the extra reassurance.

Although the subscriber can add somebody's contact details
themselves, we'd always recommend asking first!

Nobody particularly wants a mysterious message arriving unexpectedly telling them to check on someone. A quick conversation beforehand means everybody understands what they've agreed to and what they might do if they're contacted. Anyone added in error can also contact YourPING directly and ask to be removed.

Ultimately, choosing a trusted contact isn't about finding someone prepared to watch over you. It's about identifying the people you'd want to hear from if, one day, you didn't check in as expected.

Technology can raise the flag, but sometimes you need a human to ask, "Are you OK?"

Until next time ...

About Steffi Lewis ...

Steffi Lewis

Based in the charming village of Hanslope in Buckinghamshire, UK, I bring over 30 years of experience in web development. From creating my first website for the Open University in 1993, through being part of the dot com boom, to my explorations in SaaS and AI over the last few years, my journey has been a rich tapestry of web projects, big and small, both funded and bootstrapped.

YourPING was created around a very modern idea: in a world of remote work, automated living and digital communication, it has become surprisingly easy for people to quietly drift off the radar. Bills are paid automatically, shopping arrives online and many people can go days without speaking to someone directly, even while remaining connected to the world through screens and social media.

Designed as a calm and supportive daily check-in system, YourPING helps provide quiet reassurance for people who live alone, work remotely, travel frequently or simply value their independence. Using browser notifications, SMS backup alerts, email escalation and trusted contacts, the platform is intentionally simple to use without complicated gadgets, wearables or intrusive monitoring.

At its heart, YourPING is not about fear or surveillance. It is about modern independent living and the simple comfort of knowing that if something feels unusual, somebody will notice.

My head is in the cloud, my heart belongs to the web, and my soul is filled with such beautiful code 💚
