The silent problem of loneliness in modern Britain

Loneliness in modern Britain does not always look like isolation. It can look like independence, remote working, online shopping and a perfectly ordinary life. Someone may exchange messages, attend video calls, and even see people in passing, yet go days without meaningful human contact ...

A friendly wave between neighbours shows how small moments of connection can help challenge loneliness in modern Britain

That is why regular wellbeing check-ins matter. They create a simple point in the day when somebody actively confirms they are okay, rather than everyone assuming that silence means everything is fine.

Almost one in four adults in Great Britain
reported that they often felt lonely!

That's according to an Office for National Statistics report from January 2026. Loneliness was not limited to older people either; adults under 50 were more likely to report it than those in older age groups who are generally more stoic.

Modern life allows us to function with surprisingly little direct contact. Bills are paid automatically, food can be left outside the front door, entertainment streams continuously, and work can be completed without even leaving home.

These conveniences are useful, but they can easily conceal someone's absence. Days may pass before a missed routine becomes noticeable, particularly when somebody lives alone and has no workplace, family member or neighbour expecting to hear from them.

Perhaps the best-known example is Joyce Vincent. She died in her London flat in 2003, but was not discovered until January 2006. She had many friends and had once lived an active social life. Yet, somehow, her absence became invisible. Her story is disturbing precisely because she did not fit the stereotype of someone society might expect to become isolated.

In 2019, Sheila Seleoane died in her Peckham flat. Her body remained undiscovered for more than two years, despite neighbours raising concerns and repeated failures to make contact with her.

Laura Winham, a vulnerable deaf woman with schizophrenia, is believed to have died in her Woking flat in 2017. She was not found until 2021. Her case later exposed serious missed opportunities by several public organisations, which should have recognised that her continued silence required further action.

These cases are exceptional, but the circumstances around them reveal a much wider problem. If nobody expects a response from us, how long would it take before someone realised something was wrong?

Checking in with YourPING is not the same as surveillance!

Daily wellbeing check-ins do not have to mean constant monitoring, tracking or surrendering independence. In fact, they can help people continue living independently while providing reassurance for everyone involved.

A check-in is as simple as answering one question at an agreed time. No cameras. No location tracking. No intrusive device watching someone's every movement.

YourPING was created around that simple principle. If someone checks in, their trusted contacts know everything is as expected. If they miss their check-in, or respond in a negative way, the system lets somebody know. It is not an emergency or medical service, but it can make unexplained silence much harder to overlook.

A regular wellbeing check-in is only the beginning. The wider ambition for YourPING is to work alongside families, charities, community groups and local organisations to build stronger networks of reassurance around people who might otherwise become isolated or overlooked.

Technology like ours can create that first dependable point of connection, but people and communities give it meaning. A missed check-in might lead to a friendly call, a conversation or practical support when it is needed most.

Because living independently should never mean being completely unnoticed.

Until next time ...

About Steffi Lewis ...

Steffi Lewis

Based in the charming village of Hanslope in Buckinghamshire, UK, I bring over 30 years of experience in web development. From creating my first website for the Open University in 1993, through being part of the dot com boom, to my explorations in SaaS and AI over the last few years, my journey has been a rich tapestry of web projects, big and small, both funded and bootstrapped.

YourPING was created around a very modern idea: in a world of remote work, automated living and digital communication, it has become surprisingly easy for people to quietly drift off the radar. Bills are paid automatically, shopping arrives online and many people can go days without speaking to someone directly, even while remaining connected to the world through screens and social media.

Designed as a calm and supportive daily check-in system, YourPING helps provide quiet reassurance for people who live alone, work remotely, travel frequently or simply value their independence. Using browser notifications, SMS backup alerts, email escalation and trusted contacts, the platform is intentionally simple to use without complicated gadgets, wearables or intrusive monitoring.

At its heart, YourPING is not about fear or surveillance. It is about modern independent living and the simple comfort of knowing that if something feels unusual, somebody will notice.

My head is in the cloud, my heart belongs to the web, and my soul is filled with such beautiful code 💚
