Living alone? Why the best time to start a daily check-in is before you need it

If you're living alone, you probably don't spend much time thinking about what would happen if something unexpected occurred. You're independent, you're getting on with life, and you certainly don't consider yourself someone who needs looking after ...

When we're living alone we take precautions to ensure our safety. YourPING should be on that list!

When we're living alone we take precautions to ensure our safety. YourPING should be on that list!

But if something did happen, how long would it be before somebody noticed? When we talk to people about YourPING, we often hear the same response: “Oh, that's a fabulous idea. I live alone, and my children do worry about me ... but I don't need it right now.” And we understand exactly what they mean.

Everything is fine today, so why would you
need a daily reassurance service?

But think about the smoke alarm in your home. You don't have one because you're expecting a fire tonight. You have one because, in the unlikely event that something does go up in flames, you want a system already in place. The same goes for life insurance, seatbelts and backing up the files on your computer. We put simple precautions in place while everything is fine.

A daily check-in for people living alone works on much the same principle. YourPING isn't about expecting something bad to happen. It's simply about making sure someone notices if, for some reason, you don't check in when expected.

Perhaps you slip on the stairs. Maybe you feel unexpectedly unwell, have an accident in the garden, or find yourself unable to reach your phone. None of those things means you're old, frail or incapable of looking after yourself. They're just things that can happen to any of us.

And that's why a daily check-in for people living alone can be useful long before you think you actually 'need' one. You choose when you want to check in, YourPING asks if you're OK, and if you don't respond, your chosen trusted contacts can be told that it might be worth reaching out.

There's no monitoring of what you're doing, and YourPING isn't a medical or emergency service. It's simply an extra layer of everyday reassurance for you and the people who care about you.

Perhaps the best time to start using a daily check-in for people living alone is while you're perfectly well and wondering what all the fuss is about?

After all, that's when you install your smoke alarm too.

Until next time ...

About Steffi Lewis ...

Steffi Lewis

Based in the charming village of Hanslope in Buckinghamshire, UK, I bring over 30 years of experience in web development. From creating my first website for the Open University in 1993, through being part of the dot com boom, to my explorations in SaaS and AI over the last few years, my journey has been a rich tapestry of web projects, big and small, both funded and bootstrapped.

YourPING was created around a very modern idea: in a world of remote work, automated living and digital communication, it has become surprisingly easy for people to quietly drift off the radar. Bills are paid automatically, shopping arrives online and many people can go days without speaking to someone directly, even while remaining connected to the world through screens and social media.

Designed as a calm and supportive daily check-in system, YourPING helps provide quiet reassurance for people who live alone, work remotely, travel frequently or simply value their independence. Using browser notifications, SMS backup alerts, email escalation and trusted contacts, the platform is intentionally simple to use without complicated gadgets, wearables or intrusive monitoring.

At its heart, YourPING is not about fear or surveillance. It is about modern independent living and the simple comfort of knowing that if something feels unusual, somebody will notice.

My head is in the cloud, my heart belongs to the web, and my soul is filled with such beautiful code 💚
