When we talk about new technology, there is often an assumption that everyone needs the latest smartphone, another app to install, and yet another password to remember. YourPING is deliberately different. You don't need a smartphone to use YourPING. If your phone can receive and reply to an ordinary text message, you can easily check in ...

Is a modern smartphone necessary to check-in with YourPING? No! Just the ability to receive and send SMS

Is a modern smartphone necessary to check-in with YourPING? No! Just the ability to receive and send SMS

When a YourPING check-in arrives by SMS, the message asks a simple question. "How are you doing?" You can click the links in the message to open a browser window and check in, but if your older phone can't do that, or you're in a low-signal area where you can't get an internet connection, then reply Y if you're OK or N if you're not.

That's it. No app needs to be opened, no complicated menus to navigate, and you don't need mobile data or Wi-Fi!

That simplicity is important to us because plenty of people are perfectly happy with a basic mobile phone. Others own smartphones, but aren't particularly interested in downloading apps or learning another piece of technology. YourPING shouldn't exclude somebody simply because they don't want, need or feel comfortable using the latest technology.

SMS also has another useful advantage: it can work in places where mobile internet coverage is unreliable: in rural areas, inside buildings with patchy reception, or anywhere mobile data isn't completely dependable.

Text messages use the standard mobile network rather than needing a 4G or 5G data connection. They require very little network capacity, and if your phone temporarily loses signal, the network will normally keep trying to deliver the message when a connection becomes available again.

Technology should make that process easier
not become a barrier to using it!

So, if you're considering YourPING for an older relative, somebody living in a rural area, or anyone who simply prefers a traditional mobile phone, don't worry. If they can receive a text message and reply with a Y or N, they can still check in with YourPING.

Sometimes the simplest technology is exactly what you need.

Until next time ...

About Steffi Lewis ...

Steffi Lewis

Based in the charming village of Hanslope in Buckinghamshire, UK, I bring over 30 years of experience in web development. From creating my first website for the Open University in 1993, through being part of the dot com boom, to my explorations in SaaS and AI over the last few years, my journey has been a rich tapestry of web projects, big and small, both funded and bootstrapped.

YourPING was created around a very modern idea: in a world of remote work, automated living and digital communication, it has become surprisingly easy for people to quietly drift off the radar. Bills are paid automatically, shopping arrives online and many people can go days without speaking to someone directly, even while remaining connected to the world through screens and social media.

Designed as a calm and supportive daily check-in system, YourPING helps provide quiet reassurance for people who live alone, work remotely, travel frequently or simply value their independence. Using browser notifications, SMS backup alerts, email escalation and trusted contacts, the platform is intentionally simple to use without complicated gadgets, wearables or intrusive monitoring.

At its heart, YourPING is not about fear or surveillance. It is about modern independent living and the simple comfort of knowing that if something feels unusual, somebody will notice.

My head is in the cloud, my heart belongs to the web, and my soul is filled with such beautiful code 💚
